The influence of Sheridan Le Fanu

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

Dublin-born writer Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (1814-73) is often claimed to be the leading ghost story writer of the nineteenth century, and his novel "Carmilla" (1872), a tale of a female vampire, is said to have greatly influenced Bram Stoker in his writing of Dracula.

I read at http://www.answers.com/topic/carmilla-1 as follows:-

"Carmilla" would directly influence Stoker's presentation of the vampire, especially his treatment of the female vampires who attack Jonathan Harker early in Dracula. The influence of "Carmilla" was even more visible in "Dracula's Guest", the deleted chapter of Dracula later published as a short story."
(there are citations listed, but I can't account for the accuracy or the source for this quote)

Can someone tell me more as to the influence of Le Fanu on Stoker, and also Stoker's own view of Le Fanu and his writings?
